The position here is magical. First you plunge down rollercoaster lanes leaving the world behind, then you arrive at this lovely hotel and find a rather good view – a vast carpet of sea that shoots off to the horizon. Pine trees stand guard on one side, an old church crowns a hill on the other, then two acres of lawns roll down to a ha-ha before the land tumbles down to the bay. In summer, loungers and croquet hoops appear on the lawn, and you can nip down to a beach café for lunch by the water. Back at the hotel there’s a conservatory brasserie, a sitting room bar and a roaring fire in the half-panelled dining room. You’ll find art on the walls, polished flagstones, a terrace for afternoon tea. Follow the coastal path over the hill, then return for a good dinner, perhaps roasted scallops with caramelised orange, loin of venison with chestnut purée, lemongrass panna cotta with peach sorbet. Bedrooms have warm colours, vast beds, beautiful linen, the odd panelled wall. One has a balcony, a couple open onto terraces, all have lovely bathrooms. Gardens, beaches and the coastal path wait.

We had a wonderful stay over Easter with our two teenage sons and two dogs. Friendly staff, a fabulous restaurant, beautiful walks and scenery, a lovely bay with a great little beach cafe. A fantastic getaway. We had only booked on our arrival date and yet we were made to feel very welcome. Kids, dogs and parents all very well looked after. We will definitely return.

Local points of interest from Stephen Waite

  • Situated on the Coastal Path between Looe & Polperro, we have glorious walks to both these fishing harbour towns. We have some great secluded beaches just a 2 minute walk away one of which hires Kayaks to explore the bay.
