School Cottage

Padstow, Cornwall

Comfort on the Camel Trail: a country-casual cottage in the heart of Padstow

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

Tucked down a little lane of slate and stone cottages in the old part of town, School Cottage retains the charm of its previous life as a schoolhouse and has room for everyone – as well as surfboards, bikes and muddy boots. The large courtyard garden has lots of places to sit and delve into a book, and indoors a scrubbed pine kitchen and a cosy upstairs sitting room with wood-burner means you can spread out even when it’s lashing down outside.

It’s just a two-minute stroll to Rick Stein’s and five minutes to nearby stately home, petite Prideaux Place – a great spot when the sun’s shining. Walkers, surfers and paddlers will be in heaven, and if you time your visit for May Day you’ll spot the famous Obby ‘Oss procession passing the front door.

Birdwatchers can spot egrets, cyclists can join the Camel Trail and it’s also fun just to sit on a bench here with an ice cream and watch the hurly burly of the harbour.

We think you'll love

  • Curling up in the upstairs sitting room with the fire flickering in the log burner and a view over Padstow’s rooftops.
  • As well as a longed-for parking space, outside there’s a suntrap of a garden and a seafoam-hued summerhouse.
  • Stumbling distance to some of Kernow’s best restaurants – it’s not known as Padstein for nothing.

The neighbourhood

The craggy north Cornwall coastline hides many a pretty tumbledown harbour village, but Padstow’s particular style is a little less shabby, a little more chic. The working harbour mainly serves to supply the clutch of upmarket seafood restaurants and chip shops with the catch of the day, but you’ll still find happy families crabbing on a summer’s day – come rain or shine. School Cottage’s patch is in the oldest part of the village and a Cornish pasty’s throw from the centre.

Local points of interest from Diane Hoe

  • Stroll down to the harbour in the morning to buy breakfast croissants from the famous ‘Chough” award wining bakery, also famed for Alex Polizzi’s make over.
  • Off-road parking for 1 car. Park up on arrival, & indulge in the pure pleasure of a leisurely stroll down pretty streets to the harbour, shops & all of Padstow's excellent restaurants -just 3 mins away!
  • The cottages formed the original old Padstow School in the 1800/1900's, and retain many of the quirky, historical features, & but wonderfully comfortable, peaceful & relaxing. .
  • If walking is your thing - 5 mins from the cottage is the Coastal Path south - or - take the ferry across the estuary & walk to St.Enedoc church, or the Coastal path north. Stunning views whichever route you take!
  • A 5 min. wander takes you to local beaches along the estuary - a short trip, gives you a choice of 5 other beaches along the coast. Hire a bike & ride the Camel Trail with amazing birdlife & views, to Wadebridge & if you like a challenge - onto Bodmin!
  • Padstow is the perfect base to explore the rest of Cornwall - no where is too far away - and at the end of a busy day exploring, back to the cottage to enjoy a glass of wine in the peace & tranquillity of School Cottage garden!

Owners Diane and Ron have been coming here since 1995 – School Cottage is still their own holiday home, so there’s a lived-in feel to the place and they leave you information about good things like how to find the best crab sandwiches in Cornwall (in someone’s back garden, no less).
