Oh we do love to be beside the seaside! Poised above the cliff edge to a backdrop of rolling fields and hikers’ trails (an inspiring setting for platefuls of St Austell mussels and Fowey oysters) this glass-fronted edifice overlooks the Atlantic; a mighty setting in all weathers. Polar opposite of the ‘quaint local’, Lewinnick Lodge is large and luminous with a friendly modern vibe. Find a wall of glass, a sweep of oak, a sparkling bar, an open fire, efficient staff who make everyone welcome and that includes your dog. You can eat in or out and they specialise in fish, cooked ‘à point’ just as it should be – haddock with ratatouille and pan-fried gnocchi burst with flavour – and the emphasis is on modern British favourites. Bedrooms are light, airy and have sea views, some with a bath overlooking the ocean, all with large comfortable beds and smartly tiled bathrooms. Wander down (latest time 11.30!) to a breakfast outside on the terrace if you want: full Cornish, or a Belgian waffle with caramelised banana, slices of Baker Tom’s bread for toasting and excellent, freshly-roasted coffee. Walk it off on the coastal path.
