The Cholmondeley Arms

Malpas, Cheshire

Light-flooded former schoolhouse with a glorious oak bar offering an impressive selection of gins. Rooms are calm and comfortable

6 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

As prim and proper as a Victorian schoolmistress on the outside, as stylish as Beau Brummell within: the sandblasted brick walls of this old school house rise to raftered, vaulted ceilings and large windows pull natural light into every corner. Shelves of gin hover above fat radiators, cartoons and photos nestle amongst old sporting paraphernalia, and oriental rugs sprawl beneath an auction lot of tables, pews and chairs. The glorious carved oak bar dominates the main hall and apart from the malted charms of Cholmondeley Best Bitter and other local cask ales, there are a staggering 366 varieties of ruinously good gin to discover, with the aid of a well-thumbed guide or one of the many charming staff. And when the dinner bell goes study the menus on antique blackboards or opt for sharing the amazing seafood trawler board followed by their legendary steak and kidney pie. Rooms in the old headmaster’s house behind are calm and civilised with all the comfort you need. Seldom has going back to school been this much fun.

Stayed one night on way up to Cumbria. Lovely welcoming pub with a gorgeous bar The food and friendly service very good . Our room was lovely too but the bed could have been better. We will go back there another time for sure.
