The
Experience

The Old Bridge is one of those places that mixes old-fashioned hospitality with contemporary flair, a template of excellence for others to follow. It’s a big hit with the locals, who come for delicious food and exceptional wines, and it inspired the founders of Hotel du Vin, who were amazed how busy it was. Ladies lunch, businessmen chatter, kind staff weave through the throng. You can eat wherever you want: in the beautifully refurbished restaurant; on a sofa in the lounge; or sitting in a winged armchair in front of the fire in the bar. You feast on anything from homemade soup to rack of lamb (starters are available all day), while breakfast is served in a panelled morning room with Buddha in the fireplace. It’s all the work of owners John and Julia Hoskins. Julia’s interiors are dreamy, with style and comfort going hand in hand. Beautiful bedrooms have fresh colours, chic fabrics, crisp linen, padded bedheads. All have posh TVs and robes in excellent bathrooms, some of which overlook the river Ouse. John, a Master of Wine, has a wine shop in reception; you can taste before you buy (and you will).

Reviews

We needed a place to stay with three dogs whilst visiting my partner's family. We couldn't believe our luck. Our room was perfect and included aircon which meant we could leave the dogs in a cool room if needed. The staff could not do enough for us, everyone was friendly and chatty and every one of them stopped to pat the dog or bring water bowls/treats etc. The lunch and breakfast was first class, as was the service. It is a beautiful hotel and set in a beautiful location by the river. I appreciated all the little touches and attention the detail. It made the perfect weekend for us. Thank you

Julia, Solihull

I went with a friend just for teaa nd it's a lovely place to chat and catch up. the seats are far enough apart to avoid everyoen being able to join in with your conversation and comfortable enough to encourage a second pot of tea.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from John & Julia Hoskins

  • The Old Bridge is a Georgian townhouse, built as a bank, converted to a hotel in the late 19th Century
  • The wonderful university city of Cambridge is only 14 miles away
  • In the other direction the cathedral city of Ely is a half hour drive
  • Huntingdon is the perfect meeting point, roughly midway between London and York, or Birmingham and the east coast, or Manchester and Dover
