The Experience

Park in the lane, then walk down the side path to the end of the garden. Find a little courtyard with a table and chairs for catching the evening sun next to a stone barn that used to be a cart shed for the dairy.

Downstairs is open-plan with a wood-burner, upstairs has a pretty bedroom with views of the village church and beyond it, Bath. Lovely Maggie lives in the main house, and leaves you with fresh flowers, a basket of logs, tea, coffee and milk; she’ll fetch croissants from the village for breakfast and leave them outside your door if you like.

Walk into the village to the community shop, take a day trip to Bath, cool off in the river on hot days or just sit in the window seat and read or paint. The nearest pub for dinner, The Crown, is a short stroll away.

Lovely peaceful getaway near Bath with a friendly host and everything you need on your doorstep

Helen, Birmingham

We had a wonderful stay at the Old Dairy Barn! It is beautifully renovated, and Maggie was very helpful in planning our few days exploring Bath and the surrounding area. The bus in and out of Bath is THE way to go, so easy! We loved having our private courtyard area for a cup of tea, and the nights were blissfully quiet. Thanks Maggie, we will return!

Tess, Vancouver

Most excellent location and quality of lodging. 3 mile delightful walk along a picturesque canal to Bath. Excellent location for day trips in any direction. Quiet evenings with amazing, postcard perfect views from the master bedroom window seat. Woke with a cup of coffee sitting there and enjoyed a cup of tea in the evening with the most incredible view. Maggie is a kind and gracious hostess with her trusty companion, Murphy at her side. She is a wealth of information for the surrounding areas. The Old Dairy Barn is comfortable, bright and airy with charm to spare! Highly recommend!

Maureen, Aptos

We enjoyed staying at the Old Dairy Barn. It was comfortable and warm. Lovely views from the bedroom to the church and towards Bath. We got the bus into Bath from the village which worked well. It’s a great place for exploring the area.

Rebecca, Eastbourne

We had a wonderful stay at the Old Dairy Barn, the views were amazing from the bedroom window and it was very comfortable. It was a great rural location but also so close to Bath. Maggie recommended some lovely walks and pubs in the area and the local community shop was very good.

Sarah, Bridport

We had a great time at the Old Dairy Barn. The accommodation was fantastic and the location can’t be faulted. It was very dog friendly and there were some lovely touches to welcome our pooch

Tracey, Middlesbrough

Perfect accommodation for us and our poodle in Bathford. High quality property with all the amenities we needed and a well-stocked local shop just down the road. Owner and her dog Murphy were perfect hosts!

Neil, London

Old Dairy Barn is quiet and wholly self-contained, but it also has a timeless view over Bathford Church to the hills beyond. It’s a magical view to wake up to. From the door it’s a short walk onto the canal towpath and just a ten-minute drive into Bath. It is also pin-drop quiet but for the birdsong. A great stay. Rob

Rob, Auckland NZ

The Old Dairy Barn was perfect for our visit, its a lovely little spot, nicely furnished and well equipped. We were able to walk the dog from the door and found (with Maggie's help) some great walks. We got the Bus into Bath (15mins) from just down the hill to wander around the city and dinner. All in all, we were very happy. Thanks to Maggie for being so accommodating.

Nick, Winchester

We highly recommend this cottage for a Bath city trip, it is a great find. It is very spacious for a couple or small family, well presented with a fully equipped kitchen, a cosy log burner, and a wonderful view from the bedroom of the valley and a historic church. The place is teeming in history and the host Maggie was most accommodating.

Sophie, London

A lovely place to stay in a great location - a very quiet village just minutes from Bath. Beautiful setting with views down to the church and up to the rolling hills. The house had everything we needed and was very comfortable for cosy winter evenings. Maggie was very responsive and welcoming, in spite of Covid restrictions and distancing. Hopefully next time we can chat a bit more easily!

David, Singapore

We had a lovely time staying at the barn. The setting was absolutely stunning and the barn was warm and inviting. The place was spotless when we arrived and Maggie, the owner, was on hand to help if we had any questions. She was really welcoming but also respected our privacy. She recommended a walk from the barn to The Kings Arms in Monkton Farleigh and it was the perfect way to spend NYD. Would definitely book again and highly recommend.

Emily, Bakewell

Lovely accommodation with great views. Loads of space, well equipped kitchen, great powerful shower. The Jack and Jill bathroom provided hours of fun for our 9 year old!

Louise, Hedge End

We had the happiest holiday staying at the Old Dairy Barn. It was the perfect place for us on our first family holiday away with our 9 month old baby. Maggie was the perfect host, available to answer any questions we had, give us any restaurant or walk suggestions and even to babysit for a night when we went into Bath for dinner. The view from the bedroom is beautiful - watching the sunrise over the graveyard with Bath in the distance was incredibly special. We also enjoyed many a cosy evening with the log burner on. It was a fantastic trip - and we'd love to come back. Thank you Maggie!

Connie, London

The Old Dairy Barn is a delightful cottage, nestled in a charming village on the outskirts of Bath. Diane was a patient and accommodating host who dealt with my booking very promptly and efficiently. The interior of the cottage is exactly as indicated in the photographs and all immaculately clean. It’s always such a relief to find a genuinely well equipped kitchen too! My only regret was that I couldn’t stay longer! Next time ...

Louise, Sydney

We appreciated Maggie’s kind consideration for our comfort and accommodation as we were her first international guests since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. Having very private separate quarters with our own entrance was handy. As we were outside of Bath, in the small quaint village of Bathford, we did use local public bus service several times. Some return trips from the city were hit or miss in the evening. Uber does service the area. Travellers looking for a quintessential British stay in a historic setting should consider this location.

Bruce, Lions Head

Old Dairy Barn is a unique, cosy and quiet hideaway. We very much enjoyed our short stay at the beginning of the autumn, and would like to return for a longer stay next year.

Sarah, Worcester

Lovely week in this great cottage. Very comfortable with the most fantastic view out of the main bedroom. We had our morning coffee sitting at the window soaking it in. We had everything we needed and liked being in Bathford and using the village shop. Maggie was so friendly and helpful we couldn't go wrong. It was really easy to get into Bath either by car or bus. Other good things to do on the outskirts of Bath. Our favourite was The Holbolurne gallery. The cafe is great there too, overlooking the garden. Love to go again

Gill, Winster

We spent a lovely couple of nights in this immaculate property. The bedroom has the most fabulous views and we loved the hidden path down past the church to pub. Maggie's late husband painted from the Old Dairy Barn and we bought some beautiful cards of his work. We were able to walk from Bathford along the canal to the centre of Bath, coming out in Sydney Gardens where we visited the Holburne Museum aka Lady Danbury's house in the TV drama Bridgerton. We will definitely be visiting again.

Rosanna, Twickenham

Wonderful stay at The Old Dairy Barn. Our host Maggie was very welcoming and helpful and the location is ideal for visiting Bath and surrounding attractions. The accommodation was very clean and Beautifully designed with nice touches/features. We had a very comfortable stay and would definitely visit again if in the area.

Location

The neighbourhood

Bathford is a proper village just outside Bath with a primary school, a church, a good pub and even a community-run shop which sells organic and local produce. You're at the conjunction of two rivers and there are lovely walks to be had, across fields and through the woods to Brown's Folly which has amazing views of Bath, or to the sweet village of Monkton Farleigh. Leave the car and get the bus into Bath city for the day - they go every 15 minutes and only take 15 minutes – or you can drive there in 10.

Local points of interest from Maggie

  • Nestled on the wooded slopes between Brown's Folly and the parish church. Great local pub with French cuisine, amazingly well stocked community shop with local organic produce and cafe, fresh croissants and pastries. Bus service to Bath every 15 minutes.
  • A 10 minute drive or brisk walk/bike ride from the Kennet and Avon Canal with its colourful narrowboats, cafes, canoe and cycle hire. Take the boat service from Bathampton Weir on the River Avon to explore the secret backwaters of Georgian Bath.
  • Explore the Bath skyline on foot, by bike, or even better see the city from the air in a hot air balloon. On a warm summer’s evening balloons rise across the valley and some even land on our doorstep in the fields around here.
  • Soak up some culture, in the museums, galleries and Georgian architecture of the Royal Crescent, The Circus, and Assembly Rooms. Visit the Holburne Museum, Fashion Museum, No 1 Royal Crescent. Take a free walking tour of the city to get your bearings.
  • The ancient Roman Baths in the city centre are seen at their most atmospheric and peaceful on late summer evenings by the light of flickering torches. You can bathe in the warm waters and book treatments at the new Thermae Bath Spa just opposite.
  • Just a stone’s throw away are the mellow Cotswold stone villages of Lacock, Castle Combe, and Corsham all famous locations for period dramas such as Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey, War Horse and more recently Poldark. The best places for a cream tea.

Introducing

Maggie

Maggie moved here 30 years ago with her artist husband Ron and their children, and at one time was the publicity officer for the Roman Baths so is a fount of local knowledge. The Old Dairy was Ron's studio and some of his prints still hang here. Maggie has turned it into a space for her to welcome guests – they love having people to stay and do house swaps with people from all over the world. Maggie loves the theatre and sometimes hosts actors from the Theatre Royal in Bath. She's also happy to arrange yoga/meditation/reflexology or reiki sessions. Or to babysit.
