Maggie’s house – the most southern on Guernsey – comes with enormous sea views: Herm and Sark glistening in the water under a vast sky, framed by a pretty front garden. The breakfast terrace is hard to beat. Find sofas in the conservatory, entertaining stories from Maggie and Francis, fabulous walks, a beach for picnics. The house started life as HQ for French pilots in WWI; these days warm, rustic interiors make for a great island base. It’s not grand, just very welcoming with rooms that hit the spot: bathrobes, super showers, fresh flowers. Use the bikes (or hire locally) then spin up the lane to a top island restaurant. Brilliant.
